UI/UX meets the World of Web 3

Throughout this series of interviews, members of the team will discuss everything from Blast Royale to cryptocurrency to art and game development. Tanya Kornilova joins us this week to share her thoughts on the importance of UI/UX in Web 3!

Who are you, what is your career background, and what do you do at FLG?

Hii! I’m working as a UI/UX designer at First Light Games and I’m very excited to be here! I just joined the team. I’ve been working as UI/UX for 6 years now, in my portfolio I have interfaces for mobile, PC MMORPG, Indie games and some game concepts ideas.

My perk is trying different stylisations of different genres of games. And if you don’t know what UI/UX specialists do — they create, engineer scenarios for players to interact with game mechanics and set them in a layout that is easy to understand. And after you did that you can cover it in a style that fits the game and creates emotions!

What aspect of the Blast Royale attracted you to work for FLG?

The mood and freshness of the game!

I’ve been searching for a new challenge and new style to try out and Blast Royale was just the right project. I’m excited to try all sorts of things that can fit the feel from the game. Also, a team of professionals! Together we can get this game to a full on pro level of epicness! Just you wait hehe

In the Web 3 industry, how significant is UX/UI?

Pretty much very significant.

You have lots of new instruments that come with Web3 — marketplace, blockchain operations, new mechanics and economics — it’s all still new for audience.

We need to make UX obvious and not confusing for players so they would have a comfortable experience. Imagine you want to play web3 game but you don’t know anything about crypto — you will be scared and confused, especially when we are talking about one’s financial operations. My task is to try make this player’s transition to web3 world as least painful as possible.

Which challenges are faced by Web 3 based apps from a UX/UI perspective?

There are mechanics that are not used in non web3 games and they are quite new for players to understand. The challenge is — when and how to introduce these mechanics, what will be the best visual for it. And also the connection between marketplace and the game itself — there are lots of scenarios where anything can go wrong. Right now we are scrupulously checking what problems can appear and mess with players’ goals. It’s a toughie but we got this!

What are the techniques and methods you have used for the Blast Royale project?

Hm, hm… I guess the usual ones, like the screen flow diagrams — to figure out game structure. Brainstorming on new style, checking the colour composition with greyscale. Prototyping screens to emulate different situations for certain actions like buying item or resetting user password. Also the animation — lots of animations in plans!

When comparing Blast Royale UX/UI with other Web 3 games, what makes it stand out?

UI of web3 games is in a very strange place right now. It’s not something developers really think of right now. But we strive to create an epic experience, even from UI. This won’t be a usual game with boring interface, we will have some fresh visual solutions, animations and sounds there. It’s still work in progress, it will take some time to create, but it will definitely be worth it!
